Seven students and three teachers from the Maria Sklodowska-Curie Comprehensive School spent more than a week in sunny Spain. The visit was part of the project “Values across Generations and Borders".
The meeting in Spain was another attraction, after the visit to Norway, organised for the students involved in the project, whose Polish coordinators are Ewa Zemanek and Dominika Owsiany.
The Polish students and teachers got to know the country of bullfighting and tortillas from 28 March to 6 April. In addition to the Poles, the meeting was attended by students and teachers from other project countries: Germany, Portugal, The Netherlands and Norway. The Polish school was represented by Bartlomiej Kopec, Anna Nieckarz, Pawel Tyron, Krzysztof Dzioba, Alicja Skorupa, Barbara Mikolajczyk and Urszula Kuś, project coordinators: Ewa Zemanek and Dominika Owsiany, and the deputy headmaster Grzegorz Tyron.
The trip was devoted to international integration, exploring the culture and customs of other countries and improving English. While visiting the school in Roquetes the Polish students and their colleagues from partner countries had the opportunity to try traditional Spanish dishes, to compete with each other in sports and to participate in the school orchestra concert. An unforgettable experience proved to be school workshops of henna tattoos or body painting. The boys left these after a few hours, but in T-shirts painted on the body or in sensational costumes of drag queens. Young Europeans also learned other languages, and presented information about their cities, regions and schools. A lot of time was devoted to sightseeing. Students and teachers took part in a guided tour of Tortosa, the town, where they lived, and then they spent the last three days in Barcelona, where the main attraction, especially for the male part of the “team”, was the famous stadium - Camp Nou. They also visited the Gothic church of Santa Maria del Mar, the Sagrada Familia Basilica, whose construction began in the nineteenth century and which has not been not completed until today, La Boqueria market, and Park Guell.
According to the students the week was full of wonderful moments. However, the hosts are the most “memorable” for them. “Spanish people are very open and hospitable. Our Spanish hosts talked with us, organized our time, had fun with us. There were no barriers - cultural or communicative,” says Bartlomiej Kopec. “People in Spain keep on smiling. You feel full of energy there. The Spanish students also learned our language eagerly. And when we were saying goodbye, we felt as if they were saying goodbye to their best friends,” adds Krzysztof Dzioba.
After returning to their country, the Polish students and teachers organized a Comenius Day at the school. “At our stand you could find out what countries participate in the project and learn some more about every single one of them We also prepared a glass cabinet and an exhibition, where you could see characteristic objects of all the partner countries. We hope that we made the project more familiar to the school and local communities,” says Ewa Zemanek.
